A larger-than-expected crowd turned out at the 2011 Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras to see one of our most spectacular Parades yet - with 135 floats and nearly 8500 participants marching through Oxford St with messages of marriage equality, pride and many more. The night began with the growl of the Dykes on Bikes, followed by the First Australian's smoking ceremony and our lead "Heroes" float featuring GLBTQ icons such as Lily Tomlin, Peter Tatchell and Lex Watson. Other highlights included the Australian Marriage Equality Now float with drag kings on stilts, drag queens in giant wedding cakes and a royal carriage, as well as giant effigies of Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott and more.
