About QWIRE

The Canberra Gay and Lesbian Qwire currently consists of approximately 60 members from all walks of life, ranging from their early 20s right through to the wiser generations; all drawn together by their common love of music and singing. 

The Qwire is a non-auditioned choir, meaning that people of varying skill levels and experience can come and develop their passion for singing and learn a few new tips and tricks every week in rehearsal, including not only vocal abilities and strength but stagecraft and even some choreography!

Having first begun in the early 90s, the Qwire continues to grow in size and the quality of its performances.  We have seen many people come and go throughout the years however many original members still remain due to the laid back and friendly atmosphere, supportive and inclusive members and energetic leadership.

The Qwire is now highly regarded within the queer community not only for its vocal strength and performances, but also for its relaxed and social atmosphere.  The Qwire brings together people from diverse sections of the ACT queer community and their allies and supporters to  challenge stereotypes, and more importantly, build a bridge between the queer community and the non-queer community of Canberra through music.

The Qwire performs extensively within Canberra each year at various functions - ranging from the International Aids Candlelight Vigil to the Canberra Bushdance.  The Qwire also performs interstate and overseas.

If you've even been thinking about coming along and joining us at rehearsal, come along, try it out - you don't even need to know what part you sing or have to read music - the support from the people around you will be all you need and before you know it you'll be performing with us!
