Grindr-BlackBerrySocial networking giant Grindr announces highly anticipated expansion to BlackBerry

Grindr Xtra, the app with the world’s largest all male mobile location-based network, is now available for BlackBerry devices.  As of March 2011, BlackBerry devices share a nearly equal part of the market with iPhone and Android. According to data released earlier this year by the Nielsen Company, 27% of smartphone users in the United States use BlackBerry, 27% use iPhone OS and 29% use Android. With this latest release, Grindr is now available on the top three smartphone platforms and reaches over 80% of all smartphone users. Now BlackBerry users can join the Grindr network and chat with other Grindr users across all platforms - BlackBerry, Apple iOS, and Android.

Covered in major media outlets ranging from CNN.com and the New York Times to the UK’s London Evening Standard and the Guardian/Observer, Grindr is a revolutionary social networking tool that uses location-based and cellular technologies to allow users to locate like-minded gay, bi, or curious men nearby, view profiles and photos, and instantly connect via chat. Since launching in March 2009 for Apple iOS devices and March 2011 for Android devices, Grindr has grown into a network of over 1.9 million users in 192 countries worldwide, currently adding 8,000 new members every day.

“BlackBerry users have been asking for Grindr since the very beginning, and we’ve been working hard to meet their needs,” says Joel Simkhai, founder and CEO of Grindr. “We are thrilled to now be able to offer Grindr Xtra to BlackBerry users and give them the fully-functional experience they’ve been asking for.”

Grindr Xtra for BlackBerry offers users special features like keyboard shortcuts optimized for the BlackBerry operating system and comes with no ad banners for an unobstructed view of the guys around you. Users can expect a truly unique and special experience, just like Grindr Xtra on other platforms.

"BlackBerry is a unique ecosystem both culturally and technically," adds Scott Lewallen, Grindr's Creative Director. "We designed the Grindr Xtra interface to speak to BlackBerry users while keeping consistent with our brand and the Grindr experience."
After working closely with beta testers and development teams, and listening to user feedback, Grindr Xtra became the obvious choice for an optimal BlackBerry user experience. Grindr Xtra caters to the unique needs of the BlackBerry platform with native features and shortcuts, and takes advantage of the entire screen by removing banner advertisements. BlackBerry users can download a free 7-day trial of Grindr Xtra from BlackBerry App World with full access to all features. After the trial period, users can continue using Grindr Xtra for $4.97 per month, with discounts available for longer subscriptions. Visit the Grindr Store in the Grindr Xtra settings menu to easily renew with one click.

Currently, Grindr is supported on the following BlackBerry models: Bold 9000, Bold 9650, Bold 9700, Bold 9780, Curve 8300, Curve 8310, Curve 8320, Curve 8330, Curve 8330m, Curve 8350i, Curve 8520, Curve 8530, Curve 8900, Curve 8910, Curve 8990, Curve 9300, Curve 9330, and Tour 9630.

More About Grindr

Understanding that one of the basic universal questions everyone asks themselves is, ‘Who or what is around me?’ Grindr and its founders have made answering that question not only the foundation for creating one of the most successful social networking apps in the world, but also the driving force behind its ongoing developments and updates.

Since launching in March, 2009, Grindr has grown into a social networking giant with over 1.9 million users in 192 countries.  As the world’s largest all male location-based mobile social networking tool for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android  and compatible BlackBerry devices, Grindr has brought together a global community of users that have made meaningful connections with the world around them. On a daily basis, 499,700 Grindr members log on and spend an average of 1.5 hours using the app. Simultaneously, some 8,000 new users join the Grindr family each and every day. The team that developed Grindr recently announced the official launch of Project Amicus, the codename and website for a new location-based mobile app that lets users discover, interact, and meet with people nearby.
