Rallies & Kiss-in to mark International Day Against Homophobia
Over 5000's Australians took part in mass rallies in Canberra and around the nation. A call for an end to discrimination in federal marriage laws. The event was part of the “Great Global Kiss-in”, and comes as the Rudd Government prepares to face an election.
Spokesperson for Equal Love Canberra, Adam Rapsey, said the rallies this Saturday should serve as a "wake-up call" for the Rudd Labor Government.
“After spending much of his term attacking the idea of marriage equality, Mr Rudd will soon face a public which is deeply disappointed with his performance on this issue,” Rapsey said.
“Sixty percent of Australians support marriage equality, but the Prime Minister remains the key person holding us back.”
Rapsey said a “Great Global Kiss-in” is a positive way to draw attention to the unequal status of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender / transsexual and intersex (LGBTI) people in Australia.
“Everyone – regardless of sexuality or gender identity – is invited to take part in the Great Global Kiss-in. It will be, above all, a statement about solidarity and love,” Rapsey said.
