Marriage equality advocates have welcomed support for same-sex marriage from ACT's Chief Minister Katy Gallagher.

Ms Gallagher has told 'The Australian'  that while she isn't  married she understands that, unilke gay and lesbian Australians, she has the option: "I have a choice, you see. I've not needed to do that for my happiness, but I understand there is a group in the community of people who want to exercise their choices."

A clear distinction was also drawn between the ACT's Civil Partnership Scheme and full Marriage Equality. The report can be accessed here.

Ms Gallagher joins the majority of ALP State and Territory Leaders who support  marriage equality, including  Victorian State Leader, Daniel Andrews,  Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh,  Tasmanian Premier, Lara Giddings, and NSW ALP Leader, John Robertson.

Alex Greenwich, Australian Marriage Equality National Convnener: "Ms Gallagher joins a growing chorus of support within the ALP leadership, who represent the views of a majority of Australians, and and even bigger majority of ALP voters".

"This level of support and advocacy from within the top ranks of the ALP will be key to delivering the outcome that a majority of of Australians will want from Labor's National Conference later this year"

The Labor Party will consider the issue of marriage equality at their national conference to be held in December this year.
