Equal rights advocates have praised the Victorian ALP state conference which today passed a motion calling for the Rudd government to remove discrimination from the Marriage Act. The move puts the spotlight on the Prime Minister ahead of a big week for the marriage equality movement.
"What is extraordinary about this development is not that the Victorian ALP state conference supports marriage equality, but that the Rudd Labor Government continues to lag behind," said spokesperson, John Kloprogge, of Equal Love Canberra.
"We will continue to see demands for marriage marriage equality coming from the grassroots of political parties. After all, sixty percent of Australians support equal marriage, according to a recent Galaxy poll," Kloprogge said.
Kloprogge said a Senate report on marriage equality is due on Thursday 26 November, and nationwide rallies will be held in response next Saturday.
"Equal rights supporters will rally in cities across the nation next Saturday, 28 November. We encourage all Australians who believe in equality and a fair go to make their voices heard," Kloprogge concluded.
