Kylie-Aphrodi-Les-FolliesKylie’s Aphrodite Les Folies tour opened in Brisbane last week to rave reviews and ecstatic audiences. Amidst a stage of Roman Pillars and feathered wreaths, chiffon togas and shirtless cherubs, oceanic nymphs swimming in virtual waters, it was like a Mid Summer Night’s Wet Dream. And our very own Aussie Aphrodite had the audience enthralled from beginning to end, with hit after hit after hit.

Being the Aphrodite tour, there was of course a lot off the latest album, with Put Your Hands Up, Better Than Today and the album’s superb title track being among the crowd’s favourites. She cooled things down with an AH-MAZING jazz version of Slow, and heated everyone back up with Kylie-classics like What Do I Have To Do and Can’t Get You Out Of My Head. There was an Angel medley featuring a new, inspired mode of public transport (an Angel, of course!), culminating in the Eurythmics There Must Be An Angel, with which Kylie gave Annie Lennox herself a run for her money.

The costuming was exquisite, featuring specially made Dolce & Gabbana originals, and there were astonishing entrances, including Kylie atop her very own Kylie statue – in profile, no less. Finally, the girl has a bust! The dancing boys and girls were the sweetest of eye candy, while the staging itself ranged from Greco-homo to a jawdropping tribute to the Bellagio in Vegas. In fact, it was more Vegas than even Bris-Vegas is used to!

With all the glitz and all the glamour, surprisingly one of the night’s highlights was a quieter moment without fancy outfits or movable staging: Just our Kylie, sat alone at the top of the stage, belting out If You Don’t Love Me, an almost forgotten b-side and one of the lady’s best torch songs. Showcasing her vulnerability, versatility and her sheer talent, the crowd ate it up. But it was, of course, the much talked about a finale of On A Night Like This and All The Lovers that had the whole room abuzz. In a moment that must be seen to be believed, Kylie and her dancers became a tower of gold beading and sexy flesh, awash in a fountain of glitter and lights. Just the way every gay boy’s dreamt it would be!

PS. A word of warning: If your tickets are in the coveted ‘Splash Zone’ be sure to wear waterproof mascara!
