No-Gay-CureNews from Brighton, England: The British Medical Association has condemned anti-gay or gay cure’ therapies as damaging, dangerous and harmful, after a meeting in Sussex seaside town of Brighton last week. More than two thirds of the medical doctors present at the conference have backed a call from the Royal College of Psychiatrists and other mental health professionals to clearly and completely reject such treatments and ban their use.

Conversion therapy or gay ‘cure’ therapies have been around for years in various forms and methods, including electric shocks, long term exposure to heterosexual pornography, punishment techniques, but recent research has found no evidence that it works and is, thus the BMA have discredited it.

Tom Dolphin, vice-chair of the BMA’s junior doctors committee, stated “”This isn’t about therapy designed to help reconcile people to their sexuality, which is laudable and appropriate, I’m talking about therapy aimed at changing that sexual orientation”

“Conversion therapy does not work, and can be actively harmful. Sexuality is such a fundamental part of who a person is, that attempts to change it just result in significant confusion, depression and even suicide. You can’t just wish away same-sex attraction no matter how inconvenient it might be.”
