US: Back in November of 2008, Proposition 8, the California ballot measure that took away the right of gay and lesbian couples to marry passed by a narrow margin, but according to a Field Poll released today, a small majority of registered voters in California believe that same-sex marriage should be legal.
51 % of those asked are in favor of same-sex marriage and 42 % oppose equality, whereas 7 % remain undecided.
The major differences in who supports or opposes equality follows the typical pattern based on demographics such as age, religious and political party affiliation.
However, when presented with offering same-sex couples civil unions over marriage, support for marriage drops below the majority amongst those polled.
The results of this poll show little change from a poll conducted in 2008. One reason for the small hike in the number of supporters could be visibility of and education about the issue, although I would speculate that as the legalization of same-sex marriage grows globally the support will grow in America as well. Americans aren’t too good at being last.
