Taylor Dayne possesses one of the greatest female voices of all time, and she has a back catalogue of material that can make your toes curl.
Best known for massive hits like I’ll Be Your Shelter, Tell It To My Heart and her cover of Barry White’s Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, she can move from rock to R&B to power ballads without so much as raising a sweat.
Back in Australia for a run of live shows, Taylor took a few moments out of her busy promotional schedule to chat to FUSE about reality television, touring the world, and all things generally glamorous.
FUSE: How are you enjoying Australian so far?
Taylor Dayne: I only got here about six hours ago, and this morning already I’ve done a photo shoot and chatted to the press. So I’m workin’!
F: When you tour, do you get to see much of each city? Or is it all hotels and venues for you?
TD: Well, it all depends. I mean, some cities you definitely don’t want a part of. But I will say that since I’m going to be in this country for twenty-five days I’d better be seeing plenty.
F: So I take it you’ve never been to Canberra before, have you?
TD: No I haven’t. It’ll be great. I hear I’m in for a treat, so I can’t wait.
F: You’ve been doing this for so long now, and you’ve accomplished so much. Has there been one specific achievement that you regard as the highlight of your career?
TD: No, it changes all the time. And just getting another single in the top ten is pretty much a damn accomplishment. I mean, nothing’s a given by any means. And now so much has changed in the media format, with the internet and obviously downloads and how you can promote music. I mean, my future is going to be highly focused on television because, to me, that’s the medium of branding. And that’s what I’m shooting for.
F: And so what’s the plan with television then?
TD: I have a television series that starts airing January, so I’ll start doing press on that. I’m part of a reality series, but I can’t really talk too much about it because they haven’t revealed who’s involved. It’ll be fun.
F: Tell me about the live show. What should we expect?
TD: There’s a lot of songs that I know specifically were very big here, like Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, I’ll Be Your Shelter, Love Will Lead You Back. So I’ll certainly be playing those hits, as well as some of my new material. My latest single is just charting in the States. It’s called Floor On Fire and it just went top twenty this week, and I’m debating whether to perform that live. To me a concert is about reconnecting with your fans, and I’ve had a wonderful long career so far. So reconnection, playing what they love, and just performing live.
F: On your last album, Satisfied, you covered the Red Hot Chili Peppers Under The Bridge, and did a really amazing version. What attracted you to a song like that?
TD: I am a fan of the Chili Peppers, so I listen to that song and hear so many layers of discovery and pain and angst and anxiety. And I also read Anthony Kiedis’ autobiography, which was just mind-blowing, so the song made sense to me. I tried to interpret it from a female gender point of view. Just kind of discover the meaning of that song and strip it down a little bit, and there you have my version.
F: You’ve got a pretty sizeable repertoire now. How much time do you have to spend on a set list?
TD: You know, I’ve been touring in the States and we had to do a condensed version of show, and you’re right – I had to really make some tough song decisions. You want to make sure that people get up, and you also want to play potentially a couple of ballads. So yeah, there’s a lengthy thought process involved, believe me.
F: Of course, you’re renowned for doing the ballads and the dance tracks in equal measure. Do you have a preference?
TD: Not really. You know, if you can do both believably just go for it. Not everybody can.
