Now call me old fashioned, but for the past 20 years (my entire life) I’ve generally considered some things as quite gender specific — my prime example in this case being make-up.
It all started with a friend of a friend. I was a little surprised when I noticed he was wearing a number of cosmetic products. At first I thought it was a little strange, I mean I’d always thought that make-up was something for the ladies? When I asked my friend about it he simply shrugged and told me that lots of guys do it.
So, I did a little asking around and soon discovered that he was right. It took me no time at all to find a number of young gay men who were willing to preach the benefits of a little foundation and eyeliner.
It seems to be that there are a few things that they all agree on: foundation is an absolute must for a night on the town; there’s nothing wrong with a little eyeliner or mascara to accentuate your eyes; and there is no shame in walking into the local chemist or Myer and buying it straight off the shelf.
The most interesting thing I found was that all these guys said the same thing when asked why they choose to wear cosmetics; all of them felt that it is something special. It makes them feel good about themselves and therefore gives them greater confidence and as such, they have a lot more fun.
So I’m wondering, am I falling behind the times, is this just another step into the 21st Century? Or is this gender equality gone mad? In my opinion you should do whatever floats your boat!
