Just What Exactly About Gays Is So Threatening To Tony Abbott?

There’s no doubt that the Australian government has a lackadaisical view of LGBT rights. The recent landslide vote against gay marriage proved that.

But I never realized how deeply rooted this fear and hatred was until I heard what Tony Abbott said about homosexuality. When asked for his views on homosexuality on the recent ‘60 Minutes’, he said “There is no doubt that challenges, if you like, orthodox notions of the right order of things,”

Okay, he’s throwing the Bible at us again. Not the first time I’ve heard the ‘natural order’ arguments. The Opposition leader went further to say, “I probably feel a bit threatened (by homosexuality), as so many people do.” Uhm, why would anyone wanna feel threatened by gay people?

It’s not like we’re gonna kidnap your children and brain wash them into an army of gay pride soldiers. Besides, we’re the minority. If anything we should be afraid of the general population which outnumbers us like 10 to 1.

And who are these so called ‘many people’ that Abbott claims to feel the same way towards gays anyway? According to a 2008 Morgan poll only 29 percent of Australians believe that homosexuality is immoral. So that’s not really a lot of people is it? The reality is even with the combined efforts of the entire Australian LGBT community we wouldn’t be able to muster a force anywhere strong enough to nudge both sides out of the 1950’s.
