A new Gallup poll suggests support for same-sex marriage in the U.S. has flattened after years of gains, while acceptance of transgender issues has also fallen. The biggest shifts are among Republicans, while Democrats and independents remain mostly steady.

About 65% of U.S. adults say same-sex marriage should be legal, down from 71% in 2022 and 2023, according to Gallup. The poll also found 62% of adults say gay or lesbian relations are morally acceptable, the lowest level since 2016.

Gallup said the decline in support is driven largely by US Republicans.

In the latest poll, only 37% of Republicans said same-sex marriage should be legal and 35% said gay or lesbian relations are morally acceptable.

Views on transgender issues have also shifted. Gallup found 38% of Americans say changing one’s gender is morally acceptable, down from 46% when it first asked the question in 2021.

The poll was based on telephone interviews with 1,001 U.S. adults conducted from May 1 to 17, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The shift feels especially stark because the long arc of public opinion had been moving the other way for years. Now Gallup is showing that both same-sex marriage support and trans acceptance are not just stalled, but slipping.
