Community Voices Matter — Have your say!

Co-design will strengthen our commitment to our communities by prioritising their voices

Community voices lead in developing sexual health campaigns. Meridian, which provides health and social support services in Canberra, are reaching out to the LGBTIQ+ community to have their voices heard by participating in co-design workshops and focus groups as they plan their upcoming sexual health promotion campaigns, projects and activities.

They want to hear from you about your experiences accessing sexual health services, where you find sexual health information, and how Meridian can better support you. With support from ACT Health and community partner organisations, including A Gender Agenda, Women’s Health Matters!, EveryMan and Canberra Sexual Health Centre, Meridian aims to amplify voices and improve services for those who have historically been overlooked and underrepresented.

Meridian says they want to ensure your voices lead their projects and remain a core part of their work.

Co-design will strengthen our commitment to our communities by prioritising their voices; increasing visibility of lived experiences; recognising the diversity within our communities; and promoting inclusion.

This year Meridan is also celebrating its 40 year anniversary. Their story can be traced as far back as 1983, when a group of gay men living in Canberra formed the ACT AIDS Action Committee in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Not long after, they became the AIDS Action Council of the ACT. The organisation has continued to evolve and expand over the last four decades to include the wider LGBTIQ+ community, people living with HIV, sex workers and people who inject drugs.

To honour the legacy of community leaders who have worked tirelessly to advocate over many years, Meridian will commemorate ‘40 Years of Action’ commencing with a season of joy and celebration as we all gear up for FreshOut Enlighten Festival, which is happening on Saturday, 11 March at Glebe Park.

FreshOut welcomes the whole community and will showcase LGBTIQ+ pride and diversity. This year they have partnered with Enlighten Festival, making the event more extensive and brighter than ever. The event will include themed spaces and non-stop entertainment for families, youth, adults and those young at heart. Meridian is also set to announce other events to celebrate 40 Years of Action over the next few months.
