What the Council Does

We advise the ACT Government on issues affecting LGBTIQA+ communities in the ACT.

The LGBTIQA+ Ministerial Advisory Council (the Council) is set up to:

  • give advice to the government on issues affecting LGBTIQA+ communities
  • keep the Minister for Disability, Carers and Community Services informed about new issues, risks and opportunities
  • consult with LGBTIQA+ people living in Canberra to hear different viewpoints and share these views with the government
  • share updates and information with LGBTIQA+ communities about the Council’s work
  • work with other ministerial advisory councils to ensure LGBTIQA+ voices and perspectives are heard.

We use the acronym 'LGBTIQA+' to include many identities and experiences, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, queer, asexual, aromantic, transgender, agender, non-binary, and intersex people. We know that there is no single experience that represents what it means to be part of the LGBTIQA+ community. The terms we use help us talk about the community, but they can't capture the full range of individual identities and experiences.

The Council is an advisory body. It does not have the power to change the laws or make other decisions on behalf of the Government.

The Office of LGBTIQA+ Affairs supports the functions of the Council.

How to join the Council

Applications are now open for positions on the LGBTIQA+ Ministerial Advisory Council, including the role of Chair, Deputy Chair and general members.

One member position is identified for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person.

Up to 4 positions are available in this recruitment round.

All roles are ministerial appointments for a 3-year term, with successful applicants starting in mid-July 2026. A merit pool will be established to fill any future vacancies.

This round aims to strengthen representation and expertise on the Council.

We want applicants who can demonstrate understanding of the interests and concerns of LGBTIQA+ people in the ACT. Especially relating to one or more of these communities:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQA+ people
  • people with variations of sex characteristics
  • Trans and gender-diverse people
  • older LGBTIQA+ people
  • LGBTIQA+ parents and carers.

To apply you will need knowledge in one or more of these areas:

  • intersections of race, ethnicity, culture, religion or migration status with LGBTIQA+ experiences
  • disability inclusion and disability justice
  • LGBTIQA+ health
  • family, domestic and sexual violence
  • working with or engaging government.

You must also demonstrate:

  • experience in developing policy advice
  • experience using lived experience to consult and engage with diverse LGBTIQA+ communities, including running genuine consultations
  • a strong commitment to inclusion
  • the capacity to actively participate in Council activities.

Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 28 April 2026.
